“Apple is expected to announce soon a new subscription plan for newspapers, which hope tablets like the iPad will eventually provide a new source of profit as media companies struggle with declining print circulation and advertising revenue.” —

“The Post’s solution was elegant and organic at the same time: It took a basic question — a question everyone, anyone can answer — and molded it into a simple but powerful piece of journalism. The tag — a more creative, dynamic version of MSNBC’s yearly replay of its initial, frenzied 9/11 coverage — invited its participants to take part in the yearly ritual of collective memory. And it defined the news organization not merely as a collector of news, but as a curator of experience.” —

Traffic Jam : CJR → cjr.org

3rd party audience sizes (Nielsen/comScore) have always been incredibly hard to understand as to why they differ so much.  Now with the addition of the Unified/Hybrid methods, sites are claiming huge growth when really they just changed the way they measured users on their site.  I blame comScore and Nielsen.  No one is perfect, but they’re sure not helping.

“If we accept that newspapers can use analytics to their benefit without letting it corrupt the most sacred of editorial decisions, I would ask a question: why can’t newspapers use multivariate testing in the same fashion? Why not, for instance, test two different versions of the same story, or present the same story using several different content approaches? Certainly this would pose some challenges, and risks, but I’d venture a guess that newspapers would also learn some very valuable lessons just as important as those they’ll learn by making use of web analytics.” —

“I do like the focus of the Washington Post however, they appear to have a greater investment in their performance metrics and have 120 different people looking at the numbers daily.” —

More coverage of web analytics at WaPo.  Doesn’t add much to the story than the other articles…
